Discovering Your Podcast Niche

You can’t be everything to everyone. That’s why it’s important to have a niche for your podcast. It will help you attract a loyal audience that will tune in week after week.

The more specific you are about what your show is about, the easier it will be to create a show that resonates with your ideal listeners.

Here are 4 ways to discover your podcast niche.

#1 Facebook groups

There are tons of Facebook groups out there on specific topics. Hop into a few of them and read the posts to see what people in your area of expertise are talking about or struggling with. How can you create a podcast that will help them overcome their problems or that will speak to their specific need?

#2 Research other podcasts

Researching other podcasts is a great way to determine if there are any holes or gaps that you can fill. What’s your spin on the topic? What will be uniquely different about your podcast that listeners will be drawn to.

#3 Idea dumping

Create a spreadsheet where you dump all of your ideas. When you start to see overarching themes, create categories. Take a look at the categories and pay attention to the ideas that keep coming up or that you feel particularly drawn to.

#4 Survey your audience

If you already have an audience, create a quick survey or poll and ask them what topics they would be interested in hearing about. Use their feedback to help you narrow down your niche.
