Which Podcast Format is Right for You?

Can you talk about a specific topic endlessly? Do you love talking to and “vibing” with others? Do you like being the center of attention, or do you tend to sit back and observe others? What ever your personality, there’s a podcast format that’s right for you.

In this blog, I’m going over the 4 most common podcast formats that you should consider when creating your show.

Solo/Monologue

One host speaks directly to the audience.

This format is great for large personalities and it might sound easier because you don’t have to book guests, but it can take just as much effort carrying a show all by yourself. On the other hand, your listeners can really get to know you and it’s easy to edit because it’s just you.

Conversational

Multiple hosts having a conversation.

This format feels like you’re listening to friends having a chat. Listeners can get to know your personality and feel connected with you but you also have to be fairly entertaining and have specific topics to discuss so that you’re not just rambling.

Interview

A host or hosts interview guests on topics in a niche.

You get to talk with thought leaders, authors, bloggers, experts, etc. Anyone with useful knowledge and a compelling story. You also get to build relationships and grow your network. This is the most popular podcast format because it allows listeners to learn while also feeling like they’re listening to a chat with friends. It does require research, a great internet connection, and planning ahead so that you have a pipeline of guest + managing booking guests takes more time/effort.

Storytelling

A host tells a long-form story that unfolds over one episode or many episodes.

This format is great for creatives and it’s often addictive for listeners (think Serial). It can also require a lot more production work than the other formats because you often need to include a lot of different elements to help tell a compelling story. It can also be more expensive because you’ll need to hire a team to create all the elements.

If more than one of these formats appeals to you, you can always combine them. For example, my show is a mix of interview and solo shows. This is your show so be creative and come up with a podcast that represent YOU.
