How to get your podcast on Apple podcasts

What’s so special about Apple Podcasts?

One of the most popular ways people find podcasts is by searching in online directories. There are a lot of them, which means podcasters will need to list their shows on multiple directories to reach the widest audience possible (Spotify, Google Podcasts, etc.)

However, Apple’s podcast directory is especially important because nearly every podcast directory uses Apple’s directory as their “master copy.” It’s also featured prominently on the desktop version of iTunes and on every version of the iPhone (700+ million people have an iPhone!).

With that much built-in exposure, it’s super important that you get your podcast on Apple’s directory.

How to get your podcast on Apple Podcasts

To get your podcast on Apple Podcasts, I recommend creating a new Apple ID. instead of using your personal account. It’s good to keep your personal information (like address) separate from a public podcast.

You’ll need to upload at least one episode to your podcast hosting platform and to grab your RSS feed url from you host.

Make sure the episode is configured correctly. And that you have these elements:

  • 2-3 line podcast description

  • episode titles have keywords (but not too many)

  • episodes are numbered

  • website address (if you have one)

  • artwork

You can read more about Apple’s guidelines here.

Podcast artwork should be:

  • a minimum size of 1400x14000 pixels and a maximum of 3000x3000 pixels

  • 73 dpi

  • in JPEG or PNG format

  • in RGB

Go to iTunes Connect and sign in with you Apple ID. Paste your RSS feed url into the field and click “Validate”. Once Apple validates your feed, click “Submit”.

It takes Apple 5-10 days to review your submission and you’ll get an email when your podcast is approved. Once your podcast is accepted by Apple your episodes will automatically appear in their directory.

A few more things

Now that you’ve submitted your podcast to Apple, you’re on you way to a live podcast! Don’t forget to factor in the 5-10 day waiting period around your launch/promotion activities. And make sure to download an Apple Podcast badge and add it to your website.
